Our story
Like many successful companies, ours started with humble beginnings. In 1986, Mark and Donna Schroeder purchased a small dowel-manufacturing company with one employee. That very first week, a massive flood nearly wiped out the business.
Instead of stopping us, the flood made us even more determined to build something great – something the entire community could be proud of.
As we grew, we transitioned into hardwood manufacturing, panel processing, and cabinetry. We have consistently invested in our manufacturing facility, always keeping our machinery up to date, learning innovative techniques, and responding to demand.
We also invest in our people, many of whom have been with us for decades, via leadership training, professional development opportunities, and by promoting from within.
Today, we partner with world-class commercial furniture suppliers and spearhead major corporate build outs.

Versatile doesn’t just talk the eco-friendly talk – we walk it too.
As an FSC® Chain-of-Custody certified company (FSC_C108155), we use hardwood grown in responsibly managed forests, work with regional suppliers, source sustainable lumber whenever possible, and assemble all products in our Michigan facility.
We use low-VOC, family-safe finish options when possible. All materials used for food- or child-related products are nontoxic.
In the winter, we heat our facility with self-generated wood waste. During the warmer months, we provide excess sawdust to local farms for animal bedding.

Mark Schroeder
President
Mark Schroeder has been the CEO and President of Versatile since our founding. After stints with Deere and Co. and McGraw Edison, Mark purchased Versatile and has grown the business to 50+ team members, expanded our customer base to serve the office, educational, and contract furniture markets, and established Versatile as a major supplier of architectural millwork. A firm believer in technology, he has continually invested in the best equipment and capabilities to better serve our customers. Mark is a strong advocate of quality products delivered on time and looks forward to leading our company’s continued growth and success.
Shawn Vanlare
Vice President of Operations
Shawn oversees every aspect of Versatile’s operations, ensuring that everything is running smoothly. He brings more than 25 years of progressive manufacturing experience to our team, ranging from automotive to furniture in OEM to a tier 3 supplier base. His experience spans domestic and international assignments. Shawn’s main mission is to support Versatile’ s growth and transition to the next generation.
Jack Schroeder
Vice President of Sales
Jack is a results-driven professional with over 10 years of sales experience in the industry. He has strong first-hand knowledge of our capabilities by learning the business from the ground up. Throughout his career, Jack has earned the trust of national and international companies and maintained strong client relationships to build solid a foundation of repeat business. He attributes his success to listening to our customers and putting their needs first.
